Attached below are three parts to an article on the word/expression/concept of "Mottainai."  It's one of those words that I've never seen introduced in a textbook, and yet you are guaranteed to hear it repeatedly if you live among Japanese people for even just a few days.  It doesn't take you long to grasp what is meant by it, but you also soon realize that its English translation varies depending on the circumstances in which it is being applied.

"It's not worth it!" (implying that the circumstances do not merit the use of the object) and "What a waste!" (scolding someone for a lapse in frugality) are two of the most common ways to use it.  However, it can also be called upon to point out the potential for a missed opportunity saying, for example, something along the lines of "It would be a waste NOT to have someone sleep on the nice air mattress even though the rest of us will have to sleep on the hard ground" or "It would be a waste NOT to share this delicious Japanese chocolate with my friends."
