PostSubject: Sensei's Favorite Series   Wed Jun 29, 2016 12:04 pm

I don't watch a lot of anime -- hardly any during the school year.  But when I do want to watch something lightly entertaining that will help me to strengthen my listening skills a little at the same time...something I could watch with my son on a summer morning while we eat our breakfast.  I usually select one of the following:

1. Atashinchi
2. Doraemon
3. Chibimarukochan
4. Sazaesan
5. Kaiketsu Zorori

I have DVD collections of the first two in the list.  I collect episodes of the others from YouTube.  I can even get some episodes in HD so it still looks nice watched full-screen on the TV.

These all tend to be rather culture heavy -- many of the episodes deal specifically with elements of Japanese life.  I'm always looking for culture-related clips I could use in the classroom, but I sincerely enjoy watching these.  Despite some regional dialect, they are also very good for language study, and I highly recommend them -- although I'm afraid you'd find them less interesting than what you're accustomed to.
Stuff like Atashinchi, Chibimaruko and Sazae are not usually laugh out loud funny, but more like -- "Yeah!  That's right!   I remember doing or thinking that very same thing!"

For example, Japanese bathrooms always have the light on the wall just outside the room which makes it very easy for someone like Dad to be cruel and click it off leaving whomever is inside sitting there in the dark.  The Atashinchi father and I are a lot alike.  And I can't help but think that other Japanese do this as well.  And yet the idea that the light switch should be outside the room has yet to change.

Kaiketsu Zorori, by the way, is childish boy humor.  Lots of "Oyaji-gyaggu" (bad puns) and a fart gag in pretty much every episode.  No red-blooded male ever really outgrows these things.

REQUEST
While episodes of most of these shows can be procured online from YouTube or any of various anime sites, I can't seem to track down any source for Atashinchi episodes in Japanese.  The few sources I have found have the audio in Tagalog, Portuguese or Chinese.

While I have several episodes of this show on DVD, I would really like to get more -- if possible, the whole collection (it ran for 7 or 8 years ending in 2009).  We watched it during the two years my family lived in Japan and just fell in love with it.  If you ever come across episodes in Japanese that can either be ordered or are available for free download, please let me know.
